Wrong encoding of Google search field

Recently, whenever I type an accented French word in the search field, the request issued to Google (displayed in the top field on the Google page) has the wrong encoding and thus does not yield the correct results. I have compared with other machines which give the correct result and we have the same basic encoding settings. I'm clueless about where the problem lies. I'm on an Intel machine.
