Q: Is there a way to group rows&columns in numbers 3.2?

Hi guys!

Can you please suggest a way to group rows and columns in groups in Numbers 3.2? I used this feature in Excel, and it is extremely useful when you deal with big amount of data.

I heard that there was categorization feature in Numbers, but it looks like it was gone in 3.2.

Categorization is gone in Numbers 3.  To view subsets of your data you can, however, use filters.

Filter is something different. It can be useful, but I need grouping - ability to roll up different rows under one.

It looks like there is no way to group rows in Numbers.

That's called Categories in Numbers. Numbers V3 was built without that capability, but Numbers V2 has it. Downgrade and you're good to go.

Are you referring to the  "Group and Outline" functionality by that name in Excel.  Or perhaps tables.

You can come close the the capability of pivot tables in Numbers by using SUMIFS and COUNTIFS:

    SUMIFS.png

A big advantage is that you can then use the results in the summary table to create charts, something you can't do with the old Numbers categories.

And filtering will easily allow you to show one "group" at a time.

I thought the old Numbers categories were sometimes convenient, but in the "nice but not necessary" category. There are other ways to accomplish the same effect that aren't too difficult and work across platform.

Yep, I meant "Group and Outline" functionality from Excel.

Thank you for your suggestions, but it looks like I should think about purchasing of MS Excel for Mac for my tasks.
