Black screen, no photos
iPhots lives on an external drive. Been working fine. But today it only comes up with a black screen. If i open the external i can see pics in individual folders but when I click on the library, same thing, black. Thoughts?

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
- Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
Running osx 10.5.8 iPhoto 08 7.1.5
Problem started when we were editing pics and then the computer kind of pixal-ized or tile-ized and froze. Upon restart, you only get framework of iphoto and where the thumbnails show up of events etc, black screen. Managed library. The only thing ive done is tried the "choose library" function and still nothing.
What format is the external drive?
im sorry, how do i check that?
mac os extended (journaled)
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your database from the last automatic backup
LN
my library is on the external, is that backed up?
No.
A back up is a duplicate on another disk - at least.
Ok, I finally backed it up. LOTS ofGs. Started rebuild. I think, It's just sitting on the black iphoto page. Right?
As I can't see your machine there is no way to answer from that amount of information.
Sorry. It looks like it's about to launch iPhoto, with the prompts, menus etc down the left side but a big black screen in the middle where the events or photos are supposed to be. No task bars or any sign that there is a function in process.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
Post back with the result.
No, that test seemed to work. I created a new "test" library on the desktop and imported three pix, I can see them fine
Black screen, no photos
