May 4, 2014 9:23 AM in response to escape28by stevejobsfan0123,The update does NOT take up more than half of your phone's memory. I think you are confusing iCloud storage (5GB) with your device's storage (16GB, 32GB or 64GB).

May 4, 2014 9:24 AM in response to escape28by Ralph9430,You can try to update with your computer. Run iTunes 11.1 or later on your computer and connect your iPhone. Select your phone in iTunes and select Check for updates in the big window to the right.
Updating while you phone is connected to your computer allows the update file to reside on the computer and therefore the update requires less space on the iPhone.
