I am trying to organize my photos. I want to group them by albums. As I look through the Events or the Photos, how can I tell if a particular image has already been assigned to an album, and which album?

I don't understand your suggestion. I tried creating a new Smart Album, but "none" is not one of the available choices.

I created a Smart Album for "Not in any", and it had no images in it. This suggests to me that all my images are in some album or another. Eventually I learned that, when you create a new album, it may contain every image displayed at the time, even if they were not selected. Other times it seems like a new album is empty. This is confusing to me, but I'll try to keep track.
One step at a time.
Hold down the Shift key, go to the File menu and you'll be able to reate an empty album.
