My mother has an old G4 iBook that we want to connect to our LAN. We are contemplating buying an Airport Extreme Card, but want to know whether the age of the laptop affects the compatibility. Also, if we buy and install the card, will we be able to connect the computer to our current network, provided by Cox Cable, which is centered around a Linksys 802.11g router? At this time, her iBook will not connect to the network with our old airport at all.
All models of the G4 iBook should support the AirPort Extreme card, which requires a mini-PCI bus slot. The AirPort Extreme, as you already know, support the 802.11g standard. You can verify this by going to the
Specifications tab of Apple's Support site.
I currently use Cox with their Motorola Surfboard modem connected to a Linksys wireless router (WRT54GC), and then wireless to my Intel Mac mini...which has AirPort Extreme built-in.
Miacis-
answers 2 ur airport card problem--if it is an iBook built b4 2004, u need another airport card. i dunt think that u will be able 2 go to a store and buy this specific older computer airport card, but i suggest that u talk to a pro even if it means goin 2 the store (better safe then sorry), and they will lead u 2 buying that airport card. i dunt know where 2 buy it, prob apple.com, but again, i recommend that u talk to an apple employee or pro.
