Why Apple Powerbook G4 only get's to the apple logo.

When i'm starting the Powerbook it go's to the Apple Logo. When i'm installing an MAC OS X software to see if i'm getting from the installation an fault. And that's right when i must select a HDD to set the software system at but mine Powerbook G4 don't detects an HDD. So what's the problem and how to fix it.
