Q: Are you able to choose what to applications and information syncs between devices?

Hi,

my girlfriend has got an iphone and has just bought an ipad mini. She is considering setting it up with its own email address/apple ID as she does not want everything being shared between the devices. Is that the right this to do?

Are you able to choose what applications and data (photos, music etc) sync between her iphone and ipad mini? Therefore she can have the devices on the same account and share musics but not picturesor imessages.

Thanks

i use 4 Apple Ios devices with 1 AppleID and have only what I want load to each one, it takes a little bit to get setup but much easier than maintaining multiple apple IDs, one concern with IDs is that anything purchased with 1 is forever linked to just that ID and can never be rtansferred, so if you have two Ids you might end up buying items twice.

Thanks for the reply and the link. This solves part of the question. The next part is can you choose what data and applications (i.e. imessage) is active on each device?

So iphone has everything from the Apple ID - music, files, imessage, pictures, apps.

Ipad mini - same Apple ID but only music.

Is that possible? and if yes how?

    Thanks.

Yes, by going through the settings on the 2nd ipad, you can choose which mail accounts to setup, and calendars,

Messages has a setting for send&Receive on each device so you can choose, for example, that iphone uses phone # and email and ipad only uses email or none.

Photostream can be turned on/off to allow sharing of photos between devcies and others if set to share.

Go through the settings app very carefully and see what options are available to you, then make your list of what you would like,

As for apps, you can set the settings for itunes & app store to auto download everything so if you buy on 1 device it goes to both, or turn that off and you can then decide if you buy an app on iphone, if you want it on ipad, you go to app store purchased tab and download it manually. (most apps are sold to be used on both, but there are a few that have an HD version which requires a seperate purchase for ipad vs iphone) also, remember that all apps and songs purchased with an Apple ID are forever linked to that APple ID, and can not be transferred to another ID, This is important especially if your email that you use for your ID ever changes, if that occurs, make sure you go to http://Appleid.apple.com and change the email and/or password for the existing ID and do NOT create a new ID, (This causes people lots of headaches).

Here is the link to the Ios 7.1 Manual:  http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1595/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf, also available in the ibooks store.

Good luck with the new device.

So iphone has everything from the Apple ID - music, files, imessage, pictures, apps.

Ipad mini - same Apple ID but only music.

Do that through iTunes. I have two devices and they have different apps loaded on them. One device has all my videos and pictures, the other only has the music. Sync what you want with each device.

so if you have two Ids you might end up buying items twice.

Not exactly true. Using iTunes you sign in with the other Apple ID and download the apps. The apps can the be loaded onto the device. My wife has her own iPad but I purchased the apps under my Apple ID. Each Apple ID can have up to five registered computers.
