Q: Error message for iPhone backup

This error message comes up when I try to backup my phone: iTunes could not back up the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone - can anyone help please? I need to back up phone and transfer to new device.

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.1.1
