is there an app to text or message without a cell plan for an iPhone 4?

My son is now using my old iPhone 4 - mostly to play games. Today he really needed to get in touch with me - but doesn't have a cellular plan on the phone (which we are not ready for him to have yet!) BUT - is there an APP that he could use to message or text me in such cases? Thanks...
