Why do podcasts I haven't subscribed to appear on my iphone? How do I disable this?

I just upgraded from an Iphone 4s to a 5s and after I synced my phone a bunch of podcast I never heard of nor subscribed to appeared on my phone (but not in iTunes). Is this some sort of terrible feature? How can I disable this?
