Security update in saying it has installed 4 times but is still trying to install repeatedly

Thanks for that Linc. i tried that as well. The computer now stops on the Software Update Launcher screen when I try to either shut down or restart. It has all the menu options greyed out on that screen. Both "services" buttons are black but have nothing to select. The top "services" button shows a greyed out "building" display. Even leaving it at this screen for a good time achieves nothing. I have to hard reboot each time
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.
Hm. Now you are scaring me. Never having done this on a Mac (Been a long time PC user). What happens to my installed progs if I do that? What if I can't remember the Apple ID and password used when I updated to Maverick? Will the current one do?

If you've been upgrading in the App Store, then you do know the Apple ID. It's the one you signed into the App Store with.
Well tried Command R to get into reinstall Operating System. Nothing happens. Tried it multiple times all the way from switching the machine on to the login screen (Remember it will not restart or shutdown from the menu. Have to power it off).
Download the Mavericks installer from the App Store and run it.
Well I reinstalled Maverick. The security update now shows as being installed 5 times. It is still showing as wanting to install again and requiring restart. As usual it stops at the Software Update Launcher. Mac will not restart or shut down still. I would have thought that reinstalling OS would have included all updates?
Further info. The Safari and IBooks updates are also showing as installed but still sat in the "software update" section and showing as needing a restart. I need some way of "forcing" a restart. When I try as I said it sits at the Software Update Launcher screen

Back up all data. Quit the App Store application if it’s running. Test after each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

from the Finder menu bar. Move the following items from the Library folder to the Trash (some may not exist):

Hi Linc - you are being so helpful I am almost embarassed to say none of the above works. It has installed it yet again it is saying but still wants a restart and still stops on SoftwareUpdateLauncher. Sorry - if you wanna give up on me I will understand. I suppose I could live with hard reboots until an update of some sort hopefully wipes out the problem. How do we tell when the OS available to download has all updates in it? or am I just hoping this will sort it? Is there something to tell App Store to stop putting it in its "brain" that I need a restart?

If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again. Select the new messages that appear.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.

I am having the IDENTICAL issue. Line by line, EVERYTHING the OP experiences is what I experience. The following are the steps leading up to the install:
1. Opened and cleared install.log in the console
2. Opened the App Store
3. Clicked updates and selected "restart" next to the Security Update.
The following details the information stored to install.log from the moment I launched the App Store through the gray screen with "SoftwareUpdateLauncher" which has to hard shut-down and finally to the power-up and log-in to desktop:
Note: as per senior Apple Advisor, I have reset pram, deleted pertinant .plist and software update files, repaired disk and disk permissions and even created a new user and tried applying from that account.

from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with an item named "folders" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart and empty the Trash. Test.
The security Update 2014-002 is now saying it has installed 4 times and is still trying to install again. Anyone else had a problem?
