This is some kind of bug. Back up all data. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /var/folders

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

    Services Reveal

from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with an item named "folders" selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your administrator password. Restart and empty the Trash. Test.

Sorry. Nope. Sec Update now says it has installed 8 times. IBooks update and Safari update 4 times. App stores has not changed in all this time. Still wants restart. When restart attempted it stops on Softwareupdatelauncher. Hard reboot still needed..

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ls -@Oaen / | pbcopy

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.

If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

Hi Linc - just for the attempt, I did all of your above tips at once. I then still had to hard boot. Initially the App Store was showing no updates. I did another install of Maverick and thought everything was good. However after a few minutes App Store popped up with  "updates available". If I ignore the update now then I can restart and shut down at least. Below the Terminal info you asked for:

Open the App Store pane in System Preferences. If the box marked Automatically check for updates is checked, uncheck it. You may have to unlock the settings to do that.

OK did that. I assume I just need to wait for an update which might sort out the problem?

Try enabling it again when 10.9.3 is released.

Hi Linc - more for your information than any hope of this getting sorted. The 10.9.3 update now behaves as the Security Update did. The bright side is all the other updates have now accepted that they are updated and no longer appear. The 10.9.3 now says it is installed and once again will hang on the Softwareupdatelauncher requiring hard reboot when I need to restart.
