using the Ipod+nike in the rain

I just bought the sport kit and although it states that it is water proof in further reading it states to not use in water or around wet areas. Now I realize that I shouldn't take the thing into a pond but does it mean I can't use it when I run in the rain? Any help would be appreciated.

If you're avoiding slogging through deep puddles and soaking the sensor for a prolonged time, and you have the connection between the receiver and the Nano protected so that there cannot be any ingress of water into the Nano, I can't imagine how Nike+ could be harmed by running in the rain.

I have had issues related to moisture with my Ipod since using the sport kit. My nano (3 months old) began to malfunction in multiple ways after I used it for several marathon training runs. I sent the ipod in for repair and was denied service due to "a spill on the ipod". There has been no spill, simply moisture produced by a good workout. I am now out of an ipod and extremely disappointed in Nike and Apple. Be careful around water--neither company provides support.

Thanks for the heads up on this issue.

I have some questions for you so that all users can learn from your unfortunate situation.

Are we talking steam or sweat? If sweat, are we talking drenched?

(Speaking of drenched, could you have completed a race and had water/champagne poured over you? Just wondering.)

How are you wearing your Nano? Armband? Wristband?

Flat to the skin? Or slightly elevated from the skin?

Is it completely covered while running (receiver & Nano)? If so, how? In Neoprene? Plastic? or what?

Thanks

No steam, no water poured on me--simply sweat. I do live in the South and am training for the NY marathon. So some long hot humid runs where I am definitely wet, but nothing more than sweat.

I wear the ipod on an armband in a neoprene cover purchased from Target (can't remember the brand name) with cutouts for the controls, the headset, and the receiver.

I really have not abused the ipod. I would take the blame and pay the price if I had exposed it to excessive moisture. I am now using my old ipod mini to run with and have no troubles--have had it for over a year and ran with it for most of the time. The mini has been dependable, but won't work with the sport kit. I simply expected the nano + kit to stand up to more than a good sweat if it was designed to be used for running.

OK, so one thing we can learn from this is to have the Nano completely encased in something waterproof so that no moisture can get into the Nano from where the receiver &/or earphones attach. There's no other way for moisture to get into the Nano unless it's submerged in water.

I really appreciate your post. It may have saved me a nano. I just got a nano and the Sport Kit, and was worried about it getting wet. Like you, I live in Atlanta (well, Decatur), and train for marathons. I laughed when I read the question asking if you got doused with champaigne. Anyway, I noticed that a little sweat got in despite the case, and have been unable to find any waterproof case that will hold the nano with the receiver attached. I thought I was just worrying too much, as it is marketed for running, so how could sweat hurt it? Well, now I know! Thanks.

Like you, I'm disappointed that Apple and Nike are selling a product which is basically not fit for its intended purpose. I guess it is aimed at runners who run a couple miles at a time. But marathon training involves sweating buckets. I will try the idea about the cling-wrap.
