I recently purchased the iPhone 5c through AT&T with an upgrade. I did not buy their insurance in the store, but the guy mentioned I could go into Apple within 30 days to purchase their insurance. Can I do this over the phone or do I need to go into the store? Also, is it actually $99 for the year as he mentioned?

It is called Applecare+. It will extend your warranty for one year and will also cover two accidental damage (water, broken screen) claims in the two year period with each claim costing you $79.00 plus tax. The cost is $99 plus tax. Go into the store to have your phone inspected.

You can take it into an Apple Store or Apple can run a remote diagnostics on it.
It's not really insurance. It does not cover loss.
It is $99 to extend coverage to 2 full years.
If you break/damage the iPhone, it is $79 to replace it. You can do do this twice in the 2 years.
