Funny you mention that because I suspect that Main Menu Pro may be the cause of your problem. That along with any number of the other suspect software you have like teamviewer, the blackberry software, and app cleaner. Try a Safe Boot to see if things are batter with all of that junk not loaded http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564

Then consider uninstalling them per the developers instructions at least temporarily to test, you can always reinstall if they prove to not be the issue.

May 6, 2014 7:39 PM in response to trevorfrommount gambier

I would, also, ditch Google Chrome.

Completely uninstall ALL Google software per the instructions on Google's website. Currently, Google Chrome and Drive are not playing well and are NOT 100% compatible/compliant with OS X Mavericks. Until Google releases a proper, working fix or update for OS X Mavericks, completely uninstall Chrome.

If you do not like Apple's Safari Web browser, as an alternative, try using Mozilla FireFox. Mozilla constantly updates FireFox and just released a new update recently and is more stable on Msvericks.

Get rid of App Cleaner and AppDelete.

You have just waaaaay toooo many apps launching at startup/login.

With only 4 GBs of RAM and with Mavericks using most of this RAM, there is simply NOT enough RAM to run all of the applications when they launch at startup. Especially when most of these just run in the background.

Plus, this has to be affecting your startup times.

Ideally, you really need to just remove ALL of these apps from launching at startup.

However, if you want, just pare these items down to just maybe to 6 items or less.

Add or remove automatic items

  1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.
  2. Select your user account, then click Login Items.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Click Add ➕ below the list on the right, select an app, document, folder, or disk, then click Add.If you don’t want an item’s windows to be visible after login, select Hide. (Hide does not apply to servers, which always appear in the Finder after login.)
    • Select the name of the item you want to prevent from opening automatically, then click Delete ➖ below the list on the right

You need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied.

You may need to, ACTUALLY, go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.

Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins and extensions, also.

MacFUSE is obsolete and hasn't been updated since 2009-2010.

So, get rid of it.

It's replacement is now FUSE for OS X. This has just been updated for Mavericks.

Once you have completed all of this, restart your Mac.

Good Luck!

Hi again Mike, I rebooted in 'safe' mode, but the issue remains the same plus no matter what page I'm on now whether it be email or in a browser window it seems to be in a state of constant refresh with the data on page folding down then re appearing or is that to be expected in safe boot mode?

Browser windows in both Safari and Google are taking in excess of 30 seconds just to open, to open an email is 7-10 seconds etc.

I haven't taken off Main Menu etc. yet, but that's what I'll try next. Thanks

May 6, 2014 8:53 PM in response to trevorfrommount gambier

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

So far, I have removed a lot of the start up apps, and dumped Google browser. That's all I've done and Everything now seems to be Heaps better. Thanks so much Mike, Michel and Linc.

As an aside, I tried to use spotlight to find MacFUSE, but a search of the iMac turned up zero results, which brings me to the next point. I don't like obsolete software still hanging in there to clog stuff up. So is there an easy way to stay on top of that?

May 6, 2014 11:50 PM in response to Linc Davis

Apologies Linc, not great at this stuff. Since posting my previous, I've noted that whilst the iMac is a Lot better, some apps like Pages still take some time to open with the spinning rainbow wheel in full flight.

I'm hoping what I've posted below helps with what you were needing and thank you for the help.

Your problem seems to be that networking is slow, not that the system is globally slow.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.

  • Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
  • If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
  • Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?
  • If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
  • Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?
  • Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
  • Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
  • Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?
  • Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?
  • If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

Hi Linc,

When you say "globally slow", does that mean it'll still have a negative effect on the computer on non web based usage (eg opening apps like Pages etc?).

It is interesting you're citing Networking being slow, we're only a block away from the local Exchange tower and have been experiencing slow speeds for 6 months or more (old Exchange and Australia's dominant 'provider' Telstra/Bigpond doesn't want to spend money to upgrade Exchange).

I haven't put my Mac's 'slowness' down to this area, as my iMac's issues don't always 'seem' (to me) net related?

This is an office situation that has 6 in total computers connected to the network, at the moment I'm the only one experiencing the issues as described, but the others have had intermittent problems that come and go of their own accord. Our IT people recently upgraded our WiFi Network to overcome our difficulties (I'm sorry I don't know the details). But if I'm understanding you correctly, the network is still an issue?

Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?

No change

If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

Couldn't manage to achieve connection.

Are any other devices on the network, and if so, are they the same?

6 printers and a VOIP connection

If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?

Only one network available.

Are all network applications affected, or only some? If only some, which ones?

At the moment, things 'seem' better, but when the issue is there, it seems to affect everything, networked or not.

Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?

Intermittent.

Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?

Sorry, but not possible. We predominantly use Canon printers and it's a Mac office, apart from Reception, which has to be Windows due to third parties (Banks and Finance Institutions inabability to provide web based software that the Macs can use). We've been taught in the past that our system is 'fragile' for multiple reasons and any type of change can upset the system in place. The IT guys we use haven't seemed to be able to provide a stable bullet proof network over the years (small City limited Good IT people available).

Start up in safe mode and test. Any difference?

No change detected, other than pages constantly in a scroll type mode (I presume that's normal for safe mode??)

Start up in Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Any difference?

I haven't had Flash for quite a while as it won't update? (presume issues with Apple?)

If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference?

Not possible, trying to turn Bluetooth off gives up the message, "You cannot control your computer if you turn Bluetooth off at this time, you would lose your input devices".

No USB 3 devices in use.

Again, thanks for your assistance.

I'm trying to determine whether you have a network problem or a computer problem. If it's a network problem, it might be expected to affect all devices on the network at the same time. Does it? If it's a computer problem, it might not be manifested in Recovery mode. Is it?

I'm also not sure from your description what the scope of the problem is. Does it only affect network applications such as web browsers, or all applications?

The log extract that you posted spans several hours and seems to begin shortly after startup. I don't know how it's related in time to the slowdowns.

May 7, 2014 8:59 PM in response to Linc Davis

Hi again Linc,

The network issue, that doesn't affect all devices/users at the same time, it's intermittent to all mostly. Two of the users utilize 3rd party financial software and that regularly gives them problems concurrently, but I don't use the same software at all.

All applications are effected, which is why I've believed it was a computer based problem.

The log extract posted yesterday was obtained via command+C, and it was at a time when the slow downs were evident. I realize it was only showing a few hours, but despite some time on it, I couldn't get more data to copy.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.

2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.

There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.

Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:

☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.

☞ Paste into the window of another application.

☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.

The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.

5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.

6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.

7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.

Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.

8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter

exec bash

and press return. Then paste the script again.

9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.

If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.

10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

[Process completed]

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.

11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.

At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "Model Identifier." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.

If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.
