Hi Allan
Thanks for replying.

Can't remember the make of the upgrade right now..... something 'Crescendo" I think.

It has been working for 4 plus years on this upgrade.

The operating system is 8.6 ++

There are no other third party upgrades

I feel this may be a hardware problem....... as it makes no attempt to do anything........ is there a simple fuse that might have gone within the computer? (the lead is definitely ok as it will take power to the monitor if we swap it).

Thanks again,

Ginny

Your G3 processor upgrade card is a Sonnet Crescendo L2 model, plugged into the L2 cache slot. Has the computer's internal 4.5-volt alkaline battery ever been replaced? One obvious symptom of a very weak/dead battery is the loss of the correct date/time, after the computer has been unplugged from electrical power and then reconnected and powered ON. Weak or dead batteries can cause startup problems, so it's usually the first recommended step in troubleshooting. Additionally, those alkaline batteries can leak, after having been fully-discharged for an extended time. The corrosion damage from leakage can ruin the motherboard. The battery is a small black plastic cube, having a red and black wire with a flat connector on the end, that's plugged into the motherboard. It's secured to the motherboard with velcro. To remove it, I use a non-conductive object, like a popsicle stick, to hold down the toothed plastic pad on the motherboard, while lifting up the battery (with the fuzzy pad on the bottom). A new battery will include another self-stick plastic toothed pad, in case the original pulls off the motherboard. The battery is a Rayovac 840, 841, or equivalent, and can be purchased from online merchants or from "battery specialty" retailers in your area.

Ginny,

Sorry; I didn't get back to your post until after work; I see that Jeff and TMM have given excellent advise.

If a new battery doesn't give you success, let's focus on the upgrade card. If the G3 upgrade is the L2 slot type, it should be possible to remove it and see if the machine will boot from the original processor, which is still there. If so, make sure the processor's contacts are clean, and reinstall. IF it still won't work, you should contact Sonnet for help, as that would indicate a fault in the upgrade.

Dear Alan & Jeff & Texas Mac man,

Thankyou so much for your prompt replies and good advice. Yes, the date was misbehaving (1956 !!) for some time now.... so we are getting a new battery as advised and hopefully that will be it. We will post here when we have done this.
Again, many thanks for your kindness in replying so promptly.

Kind regards,

Ginny
