Does this "Problem Report" reveal the cause of random Kernel Panics ?
My set-up is probably rather unique :
My late 2006 24" iMac hung in there till this past Feb., and I was still comfortably on Leopard . . . ( I know, I know . . . but I liked my apps and preferences
just fine . . for now ).
Good friends took up a collection and sent me a used late 2009 running Lion. But they hastily put in my name . . . with a password !!
So I was a guest on that HD . . . read only . . . not an administrator.
This was not the end of the world because I was usually booting to an external clone of the original volume, with Leopard, where everything was up-to-date.
However, restarting was leading to kernel panic screens descending, but randomly !
Usually not at all after rebooting to "Option" and selecting the external. If it did come, it was within 6 seconds or so of the grey Apple screen with the gearwheel just starting. Sometimes this happens once, and the next restart is fine . . . sometimes it's 3 times in row, and after the gearwheel spins for several minutes, it boots and I get another "Mac OS X Quit" - Problem Report.
A knowledgeable friend told me it looked like iShowU's app "Soundflower" was the culprit, and he'd heard this was not uncommon.
Anyone care to peruse a "Problem Report", with a Disk Warrior rebuild saved thrown in, and pick out the problem ?
Please note : a fresh install of Lion, on which I'm now the admin, was installed earlier tonight . . and it's "panicked" at least twice since then, so it must be the external . . no ?
DiskWarrior has successfully built a new optimized directory for the disk named "Recasted Crown." The new directory
is ready to replace the original directory.
All file and folder data was easily located.
Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be no changes to the number or
contents of files and folders. All files and folders were compared and a total of 28,339,520 comparison tests were
performed.
• Errors, if any, in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, map nodes, node size, node counts, node
links, indexes and more have been repaired.
• 2 folders had an incorrect item count that was repaired.
• Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.
• Critical values in the Volume Information were incorrect and were repaired.
