12/640 horizontal and vertical banding...

Hi,

i have a 12/640 that shows vertical banding (perpendicular to print direction) black on white with a regular spacing of 9,5cm. The banding does not start at the same spot on the paper and runs across the entire width od the page. It vanishes once a number of pages have been printed and returns when the printer has been idle for a while.
Not sure if this is due to the fixation unit. The printer has printed comparably little pages (15000) and the toner can not be rubbed of the printed paper (easily).

Aditionally the prints have 2-3 vertical (along the print direction) lines in the middle of the paper wich are only visible in midtones, white on grey. They run across the entire length of the paper.

Does anyone know what the likely cause of these problems is?

Thanks in advance,
Nils

hi,
i have the same problem. i believe mine began when i used stock that weighed too much. anyway, it never went away completly but try taking out the print cartridge and gently shake it from side to side - that has helped in the past. my lines no longer disappear and i think it's because i need a new cartridge - which brings me to... do you know any company that makes a print cartridge for the 12/640?

Hmm, no that doesn't help.

This is the first cartidge i'm using in this printer, which I just bought used, so i didn't shop for a cartidge so far. There's plenty rebuild or refilled cartidges available on ebay, and some original IBM cartidges ocasionally.

These are the printers that use the same cartidges as the 12/640:
IBM Network Printer 12, Network Printer 4312
NEC Superscript 1260, Superscript 1260N

I had the same problem with third-party toner cartridges after they sat unused for too long. The bands usually clear up after a few pages. So, a workaround is to put a few recycled pages in and print a few before printing your real document.

When you are ready for a new cartridge, there are lots of vendors that still sell it (Apple has stopped manufacturing it, but a few places still have OEM ones in stock). Just Google "laserwriter 12/640" toner cartridge".
