how do i delete an icon from my launchpad

I have icons that do not work in my launchpad and I want to remove them.

Removing the icon will also remove the application. If that's what you want to do, click and hold on an application icon until they all jiggle and an 'x' appears in the corner (this applies to apps installed via the App Store but not part of the OS X installation) - click on the 'x' and the icon and app should delete.

Apps that are part of the OS X installation that don't reveal an 'x' are likely third-party apps that should be uninstalled using an uninstaller that is hopefully available from the developer. Once uninstalled the icon should disappear from Launchpad.


Applications that are part of the OS X install: e.g. Mail, Safari, Stickies, etc. are best left alone and just ignored if you don't want to use them.
