Q: Stuck with iPhone 5 in Connect to Itunes display screen and does not move forward

I had an Iphone buy procured in Jan 2012 in India which was lost 2 weeks back. I had a backup on Icloud . I purchased a second hand Iphone 5 which had the latest iOS 7.1.1 , erased all earlier owner data and restored my own data from iCloud. All worked fine for 2 days . Post which after battery drainout, i put the phone on charge and the Apple Logo started flashing on and off .  After pressing the Home Key and connecting to an USB port, i was able to get it recognised by iTunes and the 1,26 GB iOS file got downloaded  and extracted .  Post that , upon connecting to an USB in the PC , the iPhone 5 comes on after simultaneous pressing of both Sleep and Home keys  to reach a state where now the Logo comes on, but quickly moves into Connect to iTunes display screen.

iTunes recoognises the phone, but does not display its serial number and while trying to install the iOS , it says that it cannot install iOS as the iPhone is not recognised . Error (21) .  Please advise how to get this phone started working again .

See this support document for an explanation of error codes. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694

The one you indicate has to do with hardware issues. Follow the instructions there, and if you still cannot restore the phone, then there is a hardware issue.

    Chris

Thanks for the quick help . Post extraction of the software by iTunes, i get the message in the iTunes Message popup " The iPhone "Iphone " could not be restored . An unknown error occurred (11) .

This probably points to some hardware fault . Interestingly the Serial Number is shown as Serial Number:n/a.

You are correct, error 11 is in the same section as error 21, a hardware error. As far as the serial number piece, it always reads n/a when restoring. That is not a fault. If you have followed all of the steps in the support document that I provided you the link to and it still does not correct it, then you need to make the appointment as indicated.
