Can I import a "backing track" into GB and play along with it?

You can add an audio file to the song as backing track.

Audio files can be accessed from the Loop Browser.

Tap the Loop Browser button Loop Browser button in the control bar. The Loop Browser button is available only in Tracks view.

Click "Audio Files" in the Loop Browser and search for your song. It needs to be stored on your iPad, e.g. in the Music app.

Please note that the Loop Browser in GarageBand (for iPad) has actually three views. You switch between them by selecting its tap on top of the window.

Apple Loops

This tap is always visible. It lists all the Apple Loops available on your iPad

Audio File

This tap is only visible if you have files in your iTunes FIle Sharing ➤ GarageBand Document area in iTunes. This is the somewhat complicated topic about getting files in and out of GarageBand with the iTunes File Sharing Procedure.

Music

This is the tab you are looking for. It is like a mini iTunes browser. Whatever songs you have synced from your local iTunes library to your iPad (and therefor show up in your Music app) will be displayed here. if you havent' synced any local iTunes songs to your iPad, then that tab will not be available.

So whatever backing song form your iTunes library you want to load into your GarageBand, you sync the song first to your iPad via iTunes, locate it in this Music tab in the the GarageBand Loop Browser and drag it to your GarageBand Song. That's it.
