I can't get rid of Limewire?!

I downloaded Limewire today and for some reason it isn't working right on my computer, so I just want to delete it. When I try to drag the Limewire file that was saved to my hard drive to the trash to delete it, I get a message that says the item can't be deleted. I want to get rid of it! Help!

Hello,

Try this:

Turn off your computer (completely shut it down).

Then, disconnect your ethernet cable (or whatever cable type you are using for your Internet connection).

Then, leave that cable / connection disconnected.

Now, turn on your computer.

Then, try to remove the file and folder that are related to LimeWire.

See if that works.

Check out this article for a little understanding as to why I propose this method to attempt removal:

http://www.123macmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6720&sid=8d05d72d780ae73188e946 7009dfd24f

Now, once you have made sure that everything is removed from your system, then go ahead and empty your trash and turn off the computer.

Reconnect your cables, and turn it back on.

Note that you can reconnect the cables with the computer on, but I would restart the computer anyway. So, either turn off and reconnect the cables, or restart and reconnect the computers.

I hope this helps.

If you are running Mac OS X 10.2 or newer, select the item in the Finder, choose Get Info from the File menu, click the padlock next to Ownership & Permissions, and then change the owner to yourself. Depending on the version of Mac OS X, you will be asked for your administrator password either when clicking the padlock or changing the owner.

If you are running an earlier version of Mac OS X, open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and enter 'sudo chown yourname' without the quote marks. Type a space in the Terminal window, drag the file into the Terminal window, press Enter, and type in your administrator password; nothing will appear in the Terminal window when you are typing your password. When done, try deleting the item again in the Finder.

Hello,

If the options mentioned by Niel don't work, then there is an almost sure-fire way.

You can enable the Root User account, and log-in as Root. Then, you can do pretty much anything you want (including deleting the files owned by "Root").

Naturally, once you were done, you would want to disable your Root account again for security purposes.

You can learn how to enable the "Root" user here:

I hope this helps.

OK, I changed the ownership details then tried to move the folder to the trash and it said: "The item 'LimeWire' cannot be moved to the trash because it cannot be deleted." Then I tried double clicking on the folder and deleting individually the things that were in the folder, and that worked. So now the folder is empty, but it still won't let me delete it. So close! Any other suggestions? Thanks for the help!

Hello,

The "Trash It" program does require you to set-up an account with the host site to download it (from "NoName Scriptware"). But, the other program seems to download fine without setting-up anything.

But, with the trouble you seem to be having, it would appear as though your best option at this point might be to try the Root user account method.

It's not really that complex to set-up. Just print-out the directions first, and then follow them as you work. Write down any user-name / passwords you create.

Then, follow the same directions to disable the Root user when done (obviously selecting the disable option instead).

I don't think you're likely to mess anything up if you are careful and deliberate in your methods.

If you cannot get the program removed by other methods, then you're really down to few options.

It seems as though you are down to either doing things as a Root user or completely re-installing OS X from scratch.

Also, just to verify, have you uninstalled the LimeWire program before starting all of this? If LimeWire is still running, then it may be working against you.

To make sure it isn't set to startup automatically, go to the Apple menu (). Then, select System Preferences. Then, "Accounts". Then "Login Items". Now, make sure that "LimeWire isn't in there". If it is, select / highlight it, and then click on the minus ➖ button below that box to remove it.

I hope this helps.
