How do I free up memory on my Macbook so I can upgrade to Mavericks?

I have a 2008 MacBook and am running OS X 10.6.8. I have 1 GB of memory, and would love to update to Mavericks. Help! How can I free up memory on my current computer without going out and buying additional hardware?
