Old hard drive as an external hard drive for files
Can I keep my data on my old hard drive as an external hard drive which will allow me to get a smaller sad hard drive?

I hope you meant a smaller SSD hard drive. And, yes, you can keep all your data on an external drive. Just remember to take that drive with you whenever you carry around your computer.
