iPod touch 5th generation external mic problem

I recently purchased a nice shotgun mic (Takstar sgc-593) so I could have better audio qaulity with my iPod. When i opened it up and plugged it in, I tested it using the default camera app (video mode) and found that the iPod was completely ignoring the external mic, and recording using the built in one. Curious if I got a faulty product, I tried it out on my laptop (a 2006 Toshiba Satellite), and found that the mic worked fine. Just to clarify, I am sure that the mic was turned on, and that the battery was good. Does anyone know why this is not working for me? I need a bit of help. I am trying to keep this as low budget as possible, so the cheaper the solution the better.

P.S. Turning off and back on again did not work, against common belief.

It is the same as headphone jack 3.5mm, so it can plug directly into my iPod. The only possible solution I found was that my mic might be stereo while my iPod is mono. If this is the problem, I think I need a converter, correct? I have a pair of happy earbuds with a mic, and those work fine with my iPod.

Not that the one with mic has the extra ring/contact opposite the plug tip. That is the mic input. The plug you use has to have the upper to contact rings One is ground and the other is mic.

The mic is mono.

As I asked, what does the plug of your mic look like?

I was looking at that, and since I'm keeping a low budget, and amazon is quicker, would this do what I need it to?
