Q: After upgrade I lost Microsoft Word, Excel.

When upgrade finished on my IMAC the dock that had icons for the Microsoft products now has "?" marks instead.  Did I lose the apps or just the Icons?  Sorry I'm not very MAC savvy yet.

    Look in your Applications Folder.

A question mark means "broken link".  You can safely drag those off the dock until they poof.  As Tony stated, the apps should still be in your Applications folder (probably under an Office folder).  You can drag each app to the dock if you prefer that.

If you were running Snow Leopard prior to Mavericks and your Office was version 2004, then you have a bigger problem.  Office 2004 is not compatible with Mavericks and you'll need an Office upgrade.

I guess that's what happemed. Had I known that I would not have upgraded.  Maybe Apple told me but I missed it if I did.  Crap!  Now I have to buy it again!

Mavericks can run both Office 2008 and Office 2011.

Office 2008 is end of life software and will receive no further updates. Surprisengly, Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Special Media Edition Upgrade is only $39.90 on Amazon. Other version that have the same thing but without the Expressions Media are over $100. You would most likely need your Office 2004 CD to prove you own Office when installing since it's an upgrade installer.

Office 2011 is due to be replaced later this year. Microsoft seems to be going to subscription service only for Office nowdays. The best deal I've seen for Office 2011 is on Amazon Office 365 Home Premium 1yr Subscription

Regular List Price:          $99.99  Price:          $67.15

Licensed for one user to install on up to five devices.

The benefit of buying Office 365 is you automaticaly get upgraded when the new version is released.

If you do buy the boxed version of Office 2011 and need email, the Home version does not come with Outlook. You have to purchase the Business version to get Outlook.

Office 2011 includes activation now. If you purchase a boxed version you need to buy for the number of installs you need. In the past we could install on one computer and one laptop. This requires a two install license.

    Hope this helps!

For Home and Student (1 user), if you don't need Outlook (and use Apple Mail), as you said, the boxed version of Office 2011 is the better deal at $103 if you don't plan to update to the subscription (I don't).

And, don't forget that Apple has Numbers, Pages and Keynote, and that there are free alternatives with OpenOffice and LibreOffice

Apple also tells you to back up your disk using Time Machine. If you don't have a backup, you can EXPECT to lose files.

At least with an app, you can buy it again (or perhaps download or get another copy cheap if you can prove ownership?). But your own personal files cannot be so easily recovered if you don't keep copies on another disk.
