Q: Xserve raid card battery - Battery Failed (code 0x#0 = 18) - help contacting apple for new battery

I am using an Xserve2,1 (2.8 Quad Core Xenon mid-2008) and my hardware raid card presented the above error code.

I am aware of the need, on occassion, to change the Cache battery.

1. Can someone point me to the correct phone number at apple to purchase a battery.  I do not have current support for this server and it seems that without applecare I cannot find a way to give my money to Apple in exchange for the appropriate part.

2. There are a number of DIY guides for replacing this battery (assuming I am able to procure one from Apple).  Can someone point me to the correct manual for this model Xserve?

Thank you.

1:  You should be able to call Apple or any Apple authorized repair center.  Generally all the is required is your serial number to confirm that the correct part is ordered.  Based on your info, this is Apple part number 922-8484.  Confirm this before ordering.  This part is also available from a number of online retailers.  If you go through Apple, please note that the older the part, the longer the wait.  I did not check inventory levels but we've seen constrained supply on older parts.

2:  The battery is deep in the machine but replacement is not too tough.  A few tips.  1.  Make sure you pull the power supplied.  2:  Make sure you pull the hard drives out of the machine as you need to remove the I/O mid plane.  3:  Use a magnetized screen driver as the screws for the fan shield at very small and you don't want to drop it into the machine.  It is possible to replace in less than 15 minutes.  Apple has posted a DIY manual here http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA277/en_US/Xserve_RAID_Card_Battery_DIY Instructions.pdf

    Good luck,
