Q: Contacts created on my iPhone update to iCloud but not to my Mac?

Recently I travelled to Italy and since I returned I have been unable to connect to the App Store and other things, but the main problem right now is that if I add a contact on my iPhone although it updates to iCloud it does not update back to my Mac. This used to work without me thinking - so much in fact, I never learned what was needed to achieve it.

How do I get my Mac to 'sync' with the data on iCloud? I did try syncing with my iPhone directly but it refused to and said "Fault -50" whatever that is...

TIA

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

If your Mac is not syncing contacts with iCloud, go to System Preferences>iCloud and make sure you have checked Contacts.  If you already have, make sure the contacts on icloud.com include all the contact currently on your Mac (add any on icloud.com that are missing), then go to System Preferences>iCloud, uncheck Contacts, choose Delete from Mac when promptes (they will still be in iCloud), restart your Mac, then go back and check Contacts again.  Your iCoud contact will download back to your Mac.  Then test to confirm that it is syncing properly now.
