Using a secondary monitor instead of a broken MacBook Pro screen

I have a broken screen on my MacBook Pro running the latest Mavericks. I see the mouse cursor on the secondary display but the background is grey. No icons. How do I set this up to be the main display.

Since you're using a MacBook Pro, you might consider using Closed Clamshell mode.
