Which rigmarole? The rigmarole of having maps and satellite images of the entire world available, on demand, over the internet, from a continually updated source?
There are offline maps, both paid-for and free, if that's what you need. However, if your signature is correct and you're still using PPCs running Tiger, then you might need to upgrade your hardware and software before they will work.
Jargon is counterproductive. I understand that Maps has been updated to re-include relevant maps offline. I'd just like to be sure that they're being saved in the program so I won't go 20 miles and have only a few major highways marked or labeled as happened last time leaving me totally and unexpectedly in the lurch.
The maps app on the Mac can push an entire route to a phone or iPad, which should provide the whole route, but the iphone and ipad themselves do not have enough storage to have every point on the Earth stored on them.
MUST every answerer be smarmy :& dismissive here? Have I asked for every point on the Earth? Do I want to download a map to a phone? Obviously not. All I need is for my mac app to work. How can you get maps not to completely forget everything when you move to a new location? That is such a simple question, a question Macintosh used to be in business to answer. Perhaps now it is in business to promote pseudointellectualism and snobbery. My laptop computer has a terabyte of memory, I think it should be able to handle a roadmap.

There is no control over the low-level caching algorithms. If you move to a new location, it assumes you are no longer in the old location.
Apple Maps is not a road map program. It is an online Maps program. If you are lucky, then it will cache data for use offline. But that is purely a factor of your luck. It isn't designed to remember places. When it does remember your activity, people complain that Apple is "tracking" them.
If you recall, Apple dropped the "Computer" from their name some time ago. They are diversified now. If you need better mapping coverage, Apple has a wide selection of mobile devices and 3G data plans available. If you want a road map program that works offline, you will have to look for 3rd party solutions.
Why are you so overly sensitive to everyones attempt to help you.
You seem to have just come here to fight instead of get help.
You obviously didn't really want any help and just wanted to rant and complain.
Go away.

It might be of interest to you that these forums are user to user only; we are volunteering our time to help. You might want to stop in an Apple store or contact Apple by phone if you wish to get an answer from them.
I am quite sure that an update allows Maps to well, be a map, offline. I will just have to remember to talk to the guys at Apple. Thanks.
