iPad 2 cracked glass -- cheap temporary fix options?

In the process of trying to bend back a bent (from dropping) 30-pin jack on our old iPad 2, the glass cracked around the home button, with a couple cracks running up the screen. Still works but the battery is shot and there are other issues, so it's not worth repairing the glass. Until we buy a new iPad, I was thinking of just covering the screen wtih self-adhesive plastic sheeting, or something like that, just to keep the glass from flaking off. Does this or something similar make sense for temporary use?

Some pads ( and phones) with broken glass, and if you are going to replace it in a while anyway, why not try a few things. Broken glass is not good for fingers on a touch based device, but you need something that will not degrade the touch.

If you are in the mood, try some clear packing tape on a small section. I know that would hold the glass in place, but I wonder if the screen will still respond to touch. Post back!
