Because AVI is microsoft powered. MP4 is more popular than AVI, and supported by many companies. MP4's compression ratio is higher than AVI, so mp4 is smaller than avi in the same quality,
To make apple support AVI is almost impossible. But you can convert AVI to MP4 easily.
