My contacts seem to be the only thing uploadilng to icloud? I click on the icloud icon in apeture, but it never appears in icloud. I'd also like to upload all the .doc files but see no optiion to do so? Thanks.

Aperture? That's not included in iCloud.

For the .doc format, you need to have Pages installed in order to sync .doc files to iCloud.
Pages is availble for purchase at the App Store but the minimum requirement is v10.9 Mavericks.
Aperture can make use of the Photostream, either uploading images to it or downloading images from other devices. You can also create streams to share images with others.
Not sure what else in Aperture you would want to put into the cloud?
