Mouse not communicating with iMac

Mouse stopped working; changed batteries multiple times, no benefit. Went to Mouse menu, Bluetooth reports Found "Bill's Mouse", I hit continue, and I get an erro message "The pairing attempt was unsuccessful. Click Coontinue to try again. WIreless keyboard works fine, so I know Bluetooth is operating. Any thoughts?
