Knowledge Base

Hi all,

I'm trying to set up a Knowledge base system for my company, I was trying to see where apple got theirs from, so see if I could get a copy of the software, but alas no clue.

Can anyone here recommend a solid easy to use, easy to read knowledge base for a medium sized company?

Thanks

Mathew

Hi Mathew,

I beleieve this forum runs on Jive software
http://www.jivesoftware.com/products/forums/

It's kind of expensive (starting at $4000 for 25 users).

You might want to look atsomething like phpbb as a free alternative http://www.phpbb.com/
phpbb works well but you need to stay on top of the security updates. There have been plenty of cases where phpbb sites got 0wn3d.

No no, I'm not looking for a forum,

Im looking for a physical Kbase system, where users can punch in something like 'How do I cook food in a microwave'
and then be directed to a page that explains the fact that you need to put food in a microwave, press the time required and then start. (stupid example I know, but Im sat opposite a microwave at the moment so thats where Im drawing my example from)

A technical example would be go to apples support page and type in something like 'option boot camp' you are presented with a page that shows 2 files, one about boot camp bluetooth keyboard and the other about using option key to boot into bootcamp.

Thanks
Mat

Ok, I understand.

You are looking to create a database and publish it to the web. There are lots of options. It;'s hard to know wht to sugest without knowing parameters such as your propective userbase, data content, required level of htm customisation, data complexity, etc. .

Your OSX Server comes with mysql server. I'm a big fan of FileMaker Pro and it's instant web-publishing can do what you want easily.

I don't know which Apple uses for KBase.

Incidentally, forums are simply specific structutes built on databases. A well-organised forum could probably serve the funtion you want. Forums have categories and are seacheable. Just make it so you are the only user allowed to post.
