Q: Clarification on HD Export (pag 319 of the book of Tom Wolsky)

At pag 319 of the book "Final Cut Express 4 - Editing Workshop" of Tom Wolsky, is written the option to export to an MPEG-4 file with data rate of 18000 Mbps. Is it correct or should it be 18000 Kbps?

thanks

Marco

I'm sure that should be 18000kbps.

    Thank you Tom.

I have a mac mini connected via HDMI to my TV and via WiFi to the Synology NAS where I store my home videos. Exporting to QT the WiFi home network is not powerful enough to stream to the mac mini and to the other wireless devices (Iphone and Ipad). So I'm struggling in finding the right exporting method to have the best quality.

Have you got other recommendations than exporting using the third otpion described in your book?

    Thanks

    Marco

Are you using AirPlay? I'd suggest exporting a QuickTime master file, not conversion, and use Handbrake to create and Apple devices compatible file to share between the devices.

exported to QuickTime master file (make movie self-contained checked) but Handbrake says "No Valid Source Found".

    Handbrake version 0.9.9 just downloaded.

    is there anything I'm missing?

    From the Handbrake support community:
" HandBrake uses ffmpeg's libavcodec for decoding. The Apple Intermediate Codec is not supported. "

So unfortunatly Handbrake is not an option. Is there any other good alternative?

No, you're not missing anything. I forgot FCE uses the old Apple Intermediate Codec.

Use QuickTime conversion and see what codecs you have available. Perhaps you have another pro app installed and will have ProRes. If not, use H.264 at 18 or 20k.

I don't know whether it will help but you can export H.264 at 10,000kbps and still get excellent results as long as your video is not predominently fast action shots.

Alternatively 1280 x 720 at 5,000kbps will give quality almost as good as 1920 x 1080 for most purposes.
