Late 2009 Macbook:what size hard drive will it accept?

Hi guys, I have a late 2009 macbook and am trying to upgrade the original hard drive (250 GB) to 1 TB. After I put the new one in I am prompted to select a hard drive to run the start up software on, yet the new drive does not appear. I read that potentially my hard drive is either DOA or possibly my computer won't accept a drive of that size. So does anybody know what size my macbook will accept?

Thanks.

MacBook (13-inch Late 2009), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

You may be able to find upgrade specs based on what companies such as OWC macsales.com have listed as suggested replacement upgrade parts for these discontinued models from MacBook1.1 to MacBook7.1

•according to http://mactracker.ca

IntroducedOctober 2009
DiscontinuedMay 2010
Model IdentifierMacBook6,1
Model NumberA1342
EMC2350
Order NumberMC207LL/A

...this is a Late 2009 MacBook•

Tech Specs: MacBook (13-inch, Late 2009) - everymac.com:

•MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 13" (Uni/Late 09) •MacBook6,1

The hard disk drive interface speed is 3.0Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)

this may be handy to know should you choose an SSD by speed.

•MacBook Unibody Model A1342 repair guide - iFixit.com:

•Apple MacBook Model selector: Memory & HDD upgrade options -OWC

http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/Macbook_ selector

Has the hard disk drive been correctly partition mapped & formatted?

{Looks as though the range of supported HDD may be 500GB to 1TB}

Good luck 🙂
