Hello!
I'm looking for help on how to import video to my Macbook Pro. I am filming with a Canon XL1 mini dv camera and my laptop doesn't recognize my camera. So I'm looking for options to get it onto my computer. I was thinking about getting an external tape deck to import it with possibly a firewire 800 connection but I'm not sure if there are any that my computer would recognize.
Any suggestions?

I believe there is a FireWire 400 port on the XL1. YOu can use a FW 400 to 800 adapter or FW 400 to Thunderbolt depending on your MBP model. If there's no FireWire on it, then you'd need a Mini DV camera or deck with a port on it. It's been a while, but back in the day you could get a Mini DV camera that would do the trick a lot cheaper than a deck.

Thanks for the input! Do you know whether or not if I use a different camera to upload it to my computer would I have to keep the settings in FCP for the Canon to capture the quality of footage or is that just held on it's own on the tape itself and just input that camera's stats into FCP?
I sent the a message through support, maybe they have a driver or something they used to have when my camera was relevant!
The quality of your footage will be the same no matter what you use to import it. As far as the meta data, I don't know.
