imac 2006 upgrade to macbook 2010

I just bought a macbook 2010 from ebay to replace a late-2006 imac. I lost my 2006 imac after a power surge/ lightning storm. I have my files backed up on external hard drive, two copies, one was a time machine back up and the other was one done with SuperDuper. The 2010 has mavericks installed...I don't think it is going to be an issue to downgrade this machine by copying over the files from my external hard drive. I was also wondering if there is way to migrate the files the way it used to be through firewire target mode. I would really appreciate any suggestions recommendation. I have a lot of software on my external hard drive that I want to be able to use on my new machine.

You can connect the two via Firewire cable in order to use Target Disk Mode to transfer data from one machine to the other. However, I would be careful about downgrading a newer machine with an older OS from an older machine. This may very well not work. You might want to stick to your data files.

Thanks, Kappy. The macbook 2010 I purchased was originally shipped with OS 10.6.8, so was hoping for compatibility. Also this macbook, only has usb ports, no firewire...so target mode is not an option.

Oh, that's too bad. You can use your network if you don't mind that it is slow. Connect both to your local network. Use Ethernet if you can because it's faster. Turn on File Sharing on both computers. You can then transfer files over the network.

Or you can create a cloned backup of the old computer to an external drive. Then connect the external drive to the new computer and restore the files from the clone.
