Depending on the build model year or version PowerBook G4, you may have a few options to try & upgrade the system OS X from (Jaguar 10.2?) to at least Tiger 10.4.11. An upgrade would require locating a retail or replacement upgrade install DVD. Then any available update steps to a base system upgrade would be downloads from the internet servers at Apple.

You may have to call AppleCare or the Apple Store US main number (see web site my apple#) and talk to an operating system Specialist, to try & locate replacement OS X system discs, with white label, either Tiger 10.4 or Leopard 10.5, that are full install discs for supported PPC Macs. These will work with any PPC Mac that can use them, and are not specific to one machine build. Some Staff do not know they exist in the Store or AppleCare database until they look to sell one. They are a fairly good deal, and if your computer could use both, and they have them, get one each. Expect to pay about $20. each or so. Not everyone who asks has gotten them, yet these exist. You'd need a DVD of whichever last OS X system your PowerBook can support. You cannot get a complete upgrade to a newer system from the internet via download.

So can you describe in detail the computer model you have, such as the information of the Processor, the display size, if the case is aluminum, titanium, other? In a running Mac computer, you can see in the main Finder menu, an Apple icon, and a drop-down menu usually appears if you click on the Apple. One of the items making an appearance there, would be "About this Mac" or about this computer. Click on it, to see what appears. This could show the System version of OS X running, the model or name of the computer with a build number or other info, and perhaps a serial number or model number. Identifiers. Another place for hardware detail and vintage info would be System Profiler. A serial number may be located in the battery bay.

Yet, do not post that information here online. It can help to further identify your PB model in several ways. You could use the serial OR model number(s) you find on or in the computer, to get more information from a lookup web site such as this one

On the outside of the computer where writing such as a date of manufacture, Apple Computer Inc, and perhaps a model number, this may help tell what computer you have in such a way to determine what system upgrades and other details we'd need to help you answer your questions. Beyond the immediate issue you face, is the need to access a newer internet than existed in the day that PB was new.

You may be able to match up your computer by specification, date of manufacture and other details from looking into databases online, such as the everymac.com site whose link I've posted below...

Usually in an OS X (if you still are running Jaguar, details differ from later OS X versions) you can look into System Preferences> Network and see how the Internet access is configured. The order of methods to connect should appear and you can choose what is important, from there. If you do not use Dialup, then you would have to find related controls to turn off that aspect and also choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet as primary internet access methods. Mine use Wi-Fi and an AirPort base station. Ethernet would be a second item, and not active. Only one of my Macs in use now have an internal 56k dialup modem. In that Mac, it is third in a list of possible items, and not active.

If you have a base station set up for wi-fi, the old PowerBook may not be able to use one that has modern settings and protocols for security. Without knowing the exact vintage of the PB or other details research is at best a wide dragnet instead of a finer field of definition. A system later than Jaguar 10.2 or Panther 10.3, would be more likely to access online; Tiger 10.4 may be the best. If you have a PowerBook G4 with a processor faster than 867MHz it could be able to run OS X 10.5.8 Leopard, the last OS X for a PowerPC.

The main problem going online is an older unsupported OS X 10.2 in vintage obsolete hardware. Then the matter of settings in System Preferences; some of them have seen a name change and details, too, since those years. The replacement system discs, if still available from Apple, are the best bet at the best cost. Otherwise you'd be looking into amazon online stores to see who has something, and learning how to avoid grey-label install discs from the wrong computers, sold anyway to people who don't know what they are.

Hopefully some of this may be of help.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
