While dragging 3000 pictures to trash, I accidently released them on desktop. Now, I just get spinning wheel and everything is frozen. Using OS 10.6.8.
What can I do??
Hold down the power button until the screen goes black.
Wait about ten seconds then turn the Mac back on.

I tried what you suggested. When it restarts, for the longest time, I just get the spinning wheel. After an extended time, I get the pointer back but nothing responds to it. I can move the pointer around, but cannot click on anything.
Restart into safe mode (hold the SHIFT key down during restart), clear up the Desktop, and restart normally.
