Q: How can I preserve files on AppleWorks 6 and DVX if I download OSX Mavericks?

How can I preserve files on AppleWorks 6 and DVX if I download OSX Mavericks?  I am currently using OS X 10.68 which is no longer supported.

I downloaded Mavericks but when I was going to install it, it warned that DivX, AppleWorks 6 and Windows Media Player won't work with this OS.

Any ideas?

Hello,

yes when Fridrich wrote this blog, even if the filter used by LibreOffice did try to convert drawing files, the result was almost always very bad, so there was no need to mention that :-)

 

     The actual version of libmwaw included in LibreOffice 4.2 have seen some improvements and the result of the conversion of a drawing/painting files must be a lot better ( but still far from perfect ), the same is true for the conversion of word processing documents with complex layouts.

 

Note:

- since this filter has continued to be improved and now it tries to import the main content of a spreadsheet or a database document ( see http://sourceforge.net/p/libmwaw/wiki/Home/ ), but this new filter has almost no chance to be included in LibreOffice 4.3, probably in LibreOffice 4.4 see https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=78018 .

    Hello Csound1,

    yes, you can also try to use directly the libmwaw library by downloading mwawCSVOSX.zip or mwawOSX.zip at http://sourceforge.net/projects/libmwaw/files/ which contain some AppleScripts which call a compiled version of mwaw2csv and mwaw2odf: two tool applications which try to convert the main content of a database/spreadshet file either in CSV or in Ods....

    Thanks, I do have that filter and it works (for me) well enough to get data from it, no formatting is left over and I had to use a custom delimiter to seperate cells.

     

    I see now that it is not part of the default package.

     

    Pages 09 would be a much easier method though.

    If you want to retrieve some formattings, you need to use mwaw2odf, ie. as the classic CSV format allows to store contents but does not seem to store formatting :-~

     

    Note: Yes, used delimiters (for field, number) and date/time format seem to depend on the country, so I have tried to add options to the excutable to redefine them :-)

     

     

    Pages 09 would be a much easier method though.

    Of course, and it is much more accurate and retrieve much more data...

    Thanks for that info, I'll try the mwaw2odf filter as soon as I can.

    Hi All,

     

    I downloaded LibreOffice and was able save all my AppleWorks files as LibreOffice files in their original locations.  There were few hundred files - no spreadsheets - so it took a while, but I didn't lose anything when I opened up Mavericks.  Also downloaded the latest version of DivX Player so none of those files got lot either.  So, apart from a few lost Windows Media Player files, the transition went OK.  Can't say I like Mavericks - it seems slower than Panther, but at least it works.  Really like that LibreOffice - good application.

    and ... if you download a copy of flip4mac you will be able to play the Windows Media files as well.
