Before you get Mavericks, make sure your software is prepared for 10.7 or later:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
Only upgrade a stable system which you need features for. Upgrading will not improve speed or stability.
If you have speed issues, see this tip:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6921
Otherwise state the reason why you think Mavericks is necessary, and if you are prepared, including backup in hand.
Thanks for your response
Yes every time I see error 1004 it says there is an error with the server,
But is been over a 2 weeks now
I keep trying hoping the problem got resolve
Still no luck
Also I have read that some people had the same problem with the IPhone and iPad
And their problem got solve by clearing the cache and history on safari
I try that I my MacBook and didn't work
I will keep trying hopping apple will fix this
Try this.
- Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
- Quit the App Store
- In Finder - Go>Go to folder... (or Apple-shift-G)
- Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
- It will take you to a folder. Move com.apple.appstore to your desktop.
- Launch the App Store. Sign in and test. If okay, delete the file on your desktop. If no change, return the file to where you got it from.
You can also try resetting the App Store and Clearing Cookies.
App Store support. There is troubleshooting and a contact link.
tried this and i think I've discovered the problem - I have no folder called "com.apple.appstore"
Anyone got anymore advice - would really love to upgrade from OS X Yosemite 10.10.5 to El Capitan
thanks in advance
Laura

I got this same error today when trying to download from the Mac App Store (MAS). I suspect Apple might be having some issues with their server.
No change for me after removing file. I'm on Mavericks and removed com.apple.storeagent folder.
This suggested possible fix isn't applicable to Mavericks. Things changed after Mountain Lion.
Do you have a fix for Mavericks? I can download anything from purchases except Mountain Lion and Lion installers. I just wanted to archive the old installers in case I needed them in the future.
Try creating a temporary new admin account to see if you can download and install El Capitan.
