Quote from above Apple support document.
Although you should always use the proper wattage adapter for your Apple notebook, you can use an adapter of a higher wattage without issue.
Absolutely. Not only does Apple concur, but I do it daily, and have for years.
In fact, my Air is running on an 85 Watt this very minute.
The only issue is making sure you have the right MagSafe connnector or adapter.
Just don't be using your 45 Watt on anything but your Air.
what year is your macbook air? because the latest macbook air is using magsafe 2, and the older using magsafe 1
about 85W charger, yes you can use it, but it may reduce the performance of your macbook air
Its a new 2013 macbook air that comes with a 45 watt magsafe 2 charger that says its 14.8 volts. The 85 watt charger is a new magsafe 2 charger that says its 20 volts. Charging a lithium batter with too high a voltage will damage the battery so I would like to hear from Apple is it is safe to use the 85 watt, higher voltage, charger.
To be clear, the wattage of the adapter is not the power delivered to the Mac, but rather the power the adapter is capable of delivering.
Think of it as the difference between a 200 HP and a 400 HP engine; both can drive at a certain speed with no issues, the difference is what happens if you floor the gas pedal.
The same is true between the higher wattage power adapter that comes with the iPad and the one that comes with iPhones; you can use the higher wattage adapter to charge and iPhone with no issue, but if you try and use the iPhone adapter to charge the iPad it may work, but it will take much, much longer.
