Q: just bought my iphone 5 it wont ring for notifacations

It sounds like you are not getting notifications. I would would first check to see if Do not Disturb is enabled as that would prevent you from getting notifications:

• To make changes to your Do Not Disturb settings, tap Settings > Do Not Disturb.

 

You should next check to see if notifications are setup properly in Settings > Notifications for your Messages, and Phone apps.
