Cannot identify iPod nano - any ideas?

When I connect my iPod nano to my laptop and open iTunes, I get a message 'An iPod has been detected, but could not be identified properly'. I have tried restarting my computer, restarting the iPod, and have removed and reinstalled iTunes. I've never had this issue before.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to resolve it?

Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPod nano being recognized in iTunes. You have taken some really good troubleshooting steps. I found an article with some additional steps you can take for the error message "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again."
