difference between flash storage and hard drive

So I'm not a real technical guy and I don't understand all the lingo... But I'm looking at buying a Macbook Pro and I'm confused about the difference between Flash Storage and the Hard Drive. Does one offer more storage per GB or what? Which is more reliable? What one do you guys prefer and why?

Yes - 1GB on a hard drive is the same as 1GB on a SSD/flash drive. In the newer Retina machines, the flash drive is not in any sort of 'casing' as SSD drives usually are, but they work on the same technology.

Flash drives/SSDs are extremely fast - and in the newest Retinas, with the flash storage on the PCIe bus, they're just about as fast as it gets - particularly the 1 TB models.

I don't have a Retina machine but I've had SSDs in my 2011 model almost since I had it. I would be very reluctant to go back to a spinning platter hard drive!

Only with the packaging and connections. A 'standard' SSD is in a form factor of a 2.5" x 7-9.5mm 'box' with a SATA connection whilst Apple's latest flash storage devices are more like daughter cards that are connected through the PCIe bus (making the flash storage in the newer Retina models a bit faster than the old SATA connector).
