DVD player freezing

I recently bought a Macbook Pro and since its first use, the DVD player freezes and has to be reset via the disc menu. It happens with any DVD I attempt to watch. I have recently noticed that it seems to happen after I pause the DVD using the spacebar; this is something I frequently do because I often watch movies at my work. It doesn't always freeze if the playback is left alone, but it always freezes at some point after the playback has been paused. Is there any way to fix this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

It sounds like the optical drive on your MacBook Pro is not responding as it should. I recommend resetting the NVRAM and the System Management Controller (SMC) using the steps in these articles first:
