Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.

Oct 13, 2015 1:03 AM in response to Carolyn Samitby Server rookie,I seem to have the same issue. I've rebooted the machine using another HD and trashed the Finder prefs and emptied Trash. After a reboot back to the HD involved, I still have the same issue. I've tried all suggestions made here and in similar threads but to no avail. However, I was able to log out and log in as another user on that same HD. On that user I have no issues and the Finder is stable. So which other prefs do I have to trash as the Finder itself has proven to have no issues? I'm on 10.9.5. TIA!

Oct 13, 2015 2:26 AM in response to Server rookieby Server rookie,I seem to have the same issue. In my case the Finder launches, puts up the dialog box and almost immediately quiIts. And repeats this over and over. 've rebooted the machine using another HD and trashed the Finder prefs and emptied Trash. After a reboot back to the HD involved, I still have the same issue. I've tried all suggestions made here and in similar threads, ran DiskWarrior, ToolTech 7 but to no avail. However, I was able to log out and log in as another user on that same HD. On that user I have no issues and the Finder is stable. So which other prefs do I have to trash as the Finder itself has proven to have no issues? I'm on 10.9.5. TIA!

Oct 13, 2015 8:25 AM in response to Server rookieby Eric Root,Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Oct 13, 2015 1:16 PM in response to Eric Rootby Server rookie,Thanks Eric. I will give it a try. The best I can do is run the app from the other user on this HD as the other user can't access the app since the Finder is not working. Or should I try to find a way to get an alias in the dock of that user?
By the way, are the prefs com.apple.BezelServices.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist in play?
Thanks!

Oct 14, 2015 9:53 AM in response to Server rookieby Eric Root,SIMBL is a sytem hack. Try removing it.
SIMBL Uninstall See solution posted by Linc Davis .
Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.
-
Oct 16, 2015 6:56 PM in response to Eric Rootby Server rookie,Thanks Eric. I found 2 files and trashed them. Then ran DiskUtility form the recovery disk several times. It only came back with the usual suspects from 10.7.5. However, when I proceed to restore the system I get a dialog warning me that this process wipes the entire disk. I thought the idea was to only restore the system? Since this is a very intensive machine I'd like to be sure before I proceed or choose to ran 10.8 over it. Please advice.

Oct 17, 2015 9:49 AM in response to Server rookieby Eric Root,I'm not clear about what you are doing. Are you restoring the system from a backup or re-installing the OS. If reinstalling the OS, it shouldn't normally affect the data files, but oops happen, which is why I suggested the backups.
-
Oct 19, 2015 12:33 AM in response to Eric Rootby Server rookie,Thanks Eric. Maybe my explanation wasn't that clear. I just followed your suggested steps in deling the Simbl files. After that I booted the Recovery disk as you (or Linc Davis) suggested and launched Disk Utility from there and from the 4 options I chose the option restore from TimeMachine. Then I got this dialog box warning me that this process wipes the entire disk. So my question is: why do I get this dialog as I only want to restore I few thing in System? By the way, I tried to skip this part and booted form the disk involved and the problem is still the same.

Oct 19, 2015 11:01 AM in response to Server rookieby Eric Root,You are welcome. A Time Machine restore from the Recovery Partition is an all or nothing restore. Have you tried reinstalling the OS?
-
Oct 20, 2015 12:54 AM in response to Eric Rootby Server rookie,Thanks Eric. TM was my first port of call as I thought it would behave just the way it normally does. I will now test what will happen if I select the original 10.7 installer.
